The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band – Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upwards

The exuberantly named then side project of Godspeed You! Black Emporer have compiled a string of fluctuating releases over the years, and have stretched their wings over a wide span of genres. The format is still tyrannical in nature, trailing no boundaries and pushing all possible barriers of rock music. The most notable addition and difference to GY!BE are Efrim’s distinct vocals that are oft described as harsh, abrasive and only for those who can acquire a taste for them. They stand out to me as cries out for help, to be listened to and a need for urgency, moreso a stylistic musical tool than a skillful execution of ‘singing’.

There is a real sort of tension in ASMZ releases, a tension that builds almost maniacly, harrowing and seemingly on the precipice of the most awful thigns one can imagine. And in this lies the beauty of ths bands recording here – the imagery and emotion within the music is compelling to say the least. I challenge anyway to not be moved by “Could’ve Moved Mountains”.
